An aversion to study hall led
Craig to his first theater class where he found an affinity for larger-than life
characters such as Eugene in GREASE, Mr. MacAfee in BYE
BYE BIRDIE and Judge Danforth in THE CRUCIBLE. No word on
whether his homework was ever finished, but an obsession was born.
Real life soon took over and he
spent eleven years as a working stiff, completely losing his performing nerve
until he chanced to notice that a local group was casting for their production
of HELLO DOLLY. Taking a shot, he was cast in the chorus. After such a
long hiatus from performing this seemed like the big time, but bigger fun was in
store. Fagin in OLIVER! was the first of many beloved roles for
Craig at various theater companies around Louisville, including lead roles in
such diverse shows as ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, TWO BY TWO, BLOOD
WEDDING, LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION!, SOMETHING’S AFOOT,
RADIO GALS, THE STAR SPANGLED GIRL and BIG RIVER.
After appearing in the Bunbury
Theater’s annual production of THE BUTTERFINGER’S ANGEL, Craig was given
the opportunity to revisit his RADIO GALS role for one night, filling in
at a last-minute performance of the Bunbury production when the lead actor was
called away on an emergency. Perhaps on the strength of these one-and-a-half
roles at Bunbury, Craig was offered the part of Monty Clef in Jeurgen
Tossmann’s original play, UNCLE SMILEY’S COMIN HOME, a role he recreated
in the film version from Focal Point Productions. On occasion, Craig has taken
the opportunity to boss around his colleagues as director in shows such as
WAIT UNTIL DARK, LOVE SEX AND THE IRS, and DIAL M FOR MURDER,
a welcome break from home life where the pets are always in charge.
Craig first performed with
Wayward in the role of Banjo in THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, then
as Dottore in THE COMPANY OF WAYWARD SAINTS. He was pleased to
officially join as a member of Wayward in January 2006.
